David Goffin, 13th in the world, managed to reach 3rd round in Rome after eliminated Leonardo Mayer first then Jack Sock. The Belgian made a superb start to the season this year. He first reached 4th round of the Australian Open before performing the feat with 2 semifinals in consecutive Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami.
On clay, Goffin was eliminated in 3rd round at Monte Carlo by Marcel Granollers 6-7 (1), 4-6. In Munich (ATP 250), he disappointed by being surprised by Zverev in the quarterfinals. Finally, in Madrid, David Goffin confirmed his poor form on clay by being out in the 1st round by the young French Lucas Pouille with 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (7).
