Betting Prediction:
In the first game on Monday, the Jets will travel to Detroit, in order to face the Lions. There is plenty of optimism in the Jets’ locker room as their highest drafted rookie appears to be drawing a lot of attention. Sam Darnold is expected to start while Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell will help with the running game, in order to make his debut easier. New York landed Trumaine Johnson during the off-season with the intention to be their shutdown corner.
The Detroit Lions are coming off consecutive 9-7 seasons and they just hired former New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to replace Jim Caldwell as head coach. Patricia will have the privilege to work with a quarterback in his prime- Matthew Stafford. Their offensive power is visible but they must improve their running game which was ranked last in 2017. The Lions ranked 27th in total defense a season ago and will likely transition to a primarily three-man front scheme like the one Patricia ran so successfully in New England.
Even though Patricia’s defensive system might not be working as good as he wants in the first few weeks of the season, I still can’t envision the Jets to take something out of this game. Their star receiver Jermaine Kearse is ruled out for this game and their offensive line is not playing very well. With that being said, Ezekiel Ansah with 12 sacks last season will be looking forward to this matchup against a rookie quarterback.
