Benoit Paire will face Stan Wawrinka in 2nd round on the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.
Preview:
Benoit Paire, 21st in world ranking, qualified for the second round in Rome following the abandonment of Bernard Tomic in the 1st round. The tournament in Rome is 7th tournament on clay since the beginning of the season for Paire. In Masters 1000 on Monte-Carlo, it has performed well by moving up until the eighth finals, easily beaten by Andy Murray 6-2 5-7 5-7. In Madrid, the French was disappointing by being out in the 1st round by Jack Sock. Paire, achieved its best performance on clay in Barcelona (ATP 500) with a semi-final, when he was defeated by Japanese Kei Nishikori with 3-6, 2-6.
Stan Wawrinka, 4th in the ATP Ranking, had a bad start to the season. He was eliminated in 4th round of the Australian Open and Indian Wells and from his opening match in Miami. The Swiss began his clay season with confidence at half mast. He played in Rome his third clay court tournament of the season after those of Monte Carlo and Madrid. In Monaco, Wawrinka was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Rafael Nadal with 1-6 4-6. On next tournament in Madrid he was surprised in hs opening match in 2nd round by Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (7), 6-7 (2).
Paire and Wawrinka, good friends in life, have already met 8 times. Wawrinka leads 6 wins at 2 in direct confrontations. The only meeting between the two men on clay was in 2012 in Buenos Aires and the Swiss had won in 3 sets (6-3 5-7 6-2).
Betting Prediction:
Wawrinka does not achieve the best start of his season. Despite this, I believe that the last winner of the French Open is over and his opponent should logically win. To raise the odd, I believe that Wawrinka has the capacity to win in two sets.
