South Dakota State finished last year with a 10-3 record and lost in the FCS Playoffs to the North Dakota State. Running back Pierre Strong returns for another season. He ran for over 1000 rushing yards last year, so we could expect an even better performance this year. Quarterback Kanin Nelson will play more this year. He is a bit inexperienced but the offense is there as the top 6 receivers also return.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers had 7 wins last year and they improved a lot in the second year under head coach P.J. Fleck. They are a great home team, losing just 3 of their last 10 home games. The running back duo Mohamed Ibrahim and Bryce Williams is back. The duo combined for 1662 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns last year. Leading receiver Tyler Johnson is back while Tanner Morgan and Zack Annexstad will provide the quarterback coverage. Both of them didn’t play much last year but one of them will have to take a step forward this year.
Minnesota has a question mark on the quarterback. The Golden Gophers also don’t win games easily and we are always in for long and narrow games. That is why I expect South Dakota State to cover the spread and lose by less than 12.
