The St. Mary’s Gaels barely made it to the next round of the tournament as they had to escape from a double-overtime game against Pepperdine. The offense could not get going for the whole game and most of the Gaels’ starters finished with less than 50% field goal percentage. Thankfully, Jordan Ford who played 50 minutes in this game managed to score 42 points. He also added 5 rebounds while Kuhse finished with 11 points and 5 assists. The defense could not contain Pepperdine’s players and Ross finished with 43 points and 8 rebounds while Edwards added 21 and 10. They got dominated on the boards and they were even struggling with the defensive rebounds.
BYU is on a 9-game winning streak, following a dominating victory over Pepperdine. Their offense played exceptionally well, shooting 53% from the field and 50% from three. Yoeli Childs continues to impress after averaging 33 points in his last two games, including the one against Gonzaga. As a whole, the team is playing very well on offense, averaging 80.6 points per game which is good for 13th in the country. The Cougars are also distributing the ball very well, being 8th assists per game with 17.7. The team has many three-point shooters, including Childs, Jake Toolson, Alex Barcello, and Kolby Lee. The way they move on the floor and distribute the ball to each other is just great. What they did to Gonzaga should not surprise us and we will how far the Cougars can go this year.
BYU is enjoying a wonderful season. The team is experienced and it is led by a few senior players who desperately want to showcase their talent in their final season. The Gaels are not nearly as effective offensively and the defense is not much better. Give me the Cougars and the points.
