Head Coach Bo Pelini started his career really well in Youngstown State, however, the team’s performances last year got worse. The Penguins lost 8 of their last 10 road games and they will start a backup QB at the start of the campaign. Good news is that the Penguins’ top three receivers all return to action, however, the starting running back is gone. Defensively, they also lost many key pieces at the linebacker position.
The Samford Bulldogs started last year very bad but turned things around and won 5 of the last 6 games they played which resulted in a 6-win season. At home, they tend to perform very well, winning 9 of their last 11 games. The suffer for them this season is real as they lost their starting quarterback, top wide receiver and top defensive lineman. The leading rusher DeMarcus Ware, however, returns for another year at the school and wide receivers Chris Selling and Jai’Rus Creamer will also be playing for the Bulldogs. They combined for 12 touchdowns last year.
Samford performs very well at home and even though their quarterback situation is not fully fixed, they can still rely on DeMarcus Ware who should even get more workload this year. Youngstown State is raw on offense and they will be asked to throw the ball more than they would’ve liked since they have lost their starting running back.
