The Long Beach State 49ers are 1-2 with their last loss being a devastating one. Stanford is not that big of a basketball program and they still managed to beat them by 28. De Geest finished with the most points for Long Beach State with 13 on a 5 of 9 shooting from the floor. They were dominated on the boards as they couldn’t get anything. They also couldn’t force any turnovers and basically, it was Stanford that was calling the plays and running everything.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels were beaten by Winthrop and it would have been the upset of the week if it wasn’t for Kentucky. Just a few days ago, the Gaels managed to beat the tough Wisconsin team that has always caused them problems. They showed two different faces just in a matter of a few days. One of the best senior college basketballers plays for them and this is Jordan Ford. He is averaging 24 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Malik Fitts and Tanner Krebs also help offensively but outside of these 3, the next leading scorer of the team is Logan Johnson with 3.5 points per game.
I know that it is early and Saint Mary’s will probably get better throughout the season but the lack of explosiveness on offense scares me. The Gaels definitely have what it takes on defense and I’m not sure how many points Long Beach State will manage to score but St. Mary’s won’t many either.
