The Iowa Hawkeyes had a solid season winning 8 of their 12 games this year. They finished the season with a 63-0 win over Illinois on the road, in order to cap it off with a 31-28 home win over Nebraska. They had a great season before losing 3 consecutive games at the end of the campaign and that cost them the Big 10. The Hawkeyes are 47th in scoring, averaging 31.5 points per game while allowing just 17.4 points per game which is good for 11th in the country.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs had a roller coaster season. They started the season 3-0 before losing 3 of their next 4 games. They turned things around in the latter stages of the season and the only loss of their last 5 games came against Alabama. The Bulldogs’ main strength is their defense and it is ranked 1st in points allowed, giving up just 12 points per game.
Both defenses are very good and I expect this to be a grind out game. Mississippi State will have a hard time converting against a tough Hawkeyes’ defense and I expect them to win the game but not by more than a touchdown.
